THINGS REMEMBERED (2)
Muscle Beach Schwarzenneggers.
Gilbo wedding celebrations.
Moray eel on the cookhouse hotplate!!!.
The Moonie who arrived at Main Camp Power Station and insisted
on sunbathing on the roof!. That escapade did his ‘family jewels’ no good as
I recall.
The squaddie from Chatham in my billet who kept a small
jar containing ‘Chatham mud’ from which he took several sniffs of each
morning. Said it reminded him of home.
The small round tubs of plastic tasting ice-cream from Hawaii.
Fags at 2/6 for a tin of 50.
A ‘Sods Opera’ concert when some Moonies impersonated a new
pop group back home called The Beatles. I had never heard of them.
The suddenness with which the rain started and stopped.
The ‘Four Brothers’.
A game of Monopoly played for 5 months with my mate Ray and
never finished.
Coke-can fishing-tackle. (We used Cider Cans. Geoff told us to!
Chatty))
Landing a shark at ‘C’ site beach which had taken two lines
and baits!.
The ‘ghost’ aircraft that flew over Port Camp one night
while we were at the Blue Lagoon Cinema. Blue-jobs insisted it wasn’t one of
ours and since The Rock was way off main routes this remained a mystery. Yes -
we were sober - well, kind of!.
Nightly meteor shows at the Blue Lagoon. And the
OOOOOOOhs!.
Hotel Street Honolulu!!. Was tickled to hear it mentioned on
‘Hawaii 5-O’ years later.
The squaddie who had a pet ‘wierdie’ which he took for
(very slow) walks on a length of string.
Fort De Russy (R & R Centre) on Waikiki beach. They (the
girls!) loved our ‘cute’ accents, even though mine was probably
unintelligible to them!
Holmes & Narver employees openly crying at Main Camp in
November when news of the Kennedy assassination hit us.
(Last one). Sitting in the departure lounge at Honolulu Airport
on the way home and reading the ‘Honolulu Advertiser’, I was amazed to see
an ‘Andy Capp’ cartoon on its pages. I wondered how the Hawaiians understood
Andys daily wife-bashing of poor Flo !.
